TO MASK OR NOT TO MASK
We have all heard the same things: wash your hands, don’t touch your face, stay at home, keep your social distance. Viruses live on boxes and plastic and doorknobs and are EVERYWHERE.
Each day we hear about more and more people testing positive for COVID-19 in our county and throughout the world.
Recent studies have suggested that COVID-19 may even be spread by people who have show no symptoms. That is why it is extremely important to take the necessary precautions to stop the spread of this virus.
As the social distancing and closure orders worked their way throughout South Africa over the past couple of weeks and with many people have hoarded food and masks everyone agrees that any available supply of medical masks should be reserved for hospitals and emergency workers. That means if you want a mask, you probably have to make it yourself.
Whether you’re making a mask for yourself or donating to a medical facility, here are a number of simple ways to make your own face mask at home:
If you have made the decision to start wearing a mask, you should take note that it takes some getting used to. A mask can be uncomfortable & hot and will fog up your glasses if you wear them. But pulling it up and down defeats the purpose of wearing it.
While we don’t have a lot of research on the effectiveness of homemade masks in preventing the spread of infection, however a mask sewn from a pattern or an improvised face covering made with a T-shirt probably offers some protection and keep your fingers away from your face!
These are a few guidelines to abide by in order for cloth masks to be effective:
1- Wash your hands before putting on your mask.
2 – Make sure it fully covers your nose and mouth. The fabric should almost touch the bridge of your nose and extend underneath your chin.
3 – Refrain from touching or adjusting your mask while wearing it as touching it could lead to contamination
4 – Wash your hands after taking it off.
5 – Wash the mask after each use by throwing it in the washing machine with laundry detergent.
Whatever you do, don’t allow a cloth mask to give you a false sense of security. Their use must be combined with frequent hand-cleaning, covering sneezes and coughs, and keeping at least one metre from others.
