You might not be able to escape to your favourite spa any time soon, but armed with just the right pampering kit, you can transform any place into a makeshift spa, where you can indulging in DIY facials, skin-softening soaks, where you can indulge in some me-time and transform yourself into a goddess.

It’s safe to say we are all in need of a little TLC right now, whether lockdown worries have triggered a few sleepless nights, the days cooped up with the family has left you feeling shattered, or if self-isolation has simply made you feeling bored & frustrated.

There are real stress-relieving benefits in taking a few minutes to draw a bath or light a candle – and that’s certainly something we could all use. A pampering day at home can be as simple as applying a mask or relaxing in a muscle-soothing soak to ease tightness from sitting on your couch…..uhm makeshift desk all day.

We have asked our very own spa managers at Guvon Spas about the art of self-care & they have shared their best DIY spa tips and home spa treatments with us for you to experiment with. Sure, there’s no comparison with the massage you would get at your favourite Guvon Spa, but we’ll take all the little luxuries and spoils we can get & an at-home spa pampering session absolutely gets our vote.

Here is our guide in creating the ultimate at home spa experience, from setting the scene right through to the tools required that’ll rival a trip to the facialist.

1.  Light a scented candle
The entrance of a spa always smells delicious – not overwhelming (if they’ve done it correctly) but just enough scent in the air to trigger a feeling of calm.

At home, lighting a candle or 2 or spritzing a fragrant room spray is the quickest & easiest way to help you slip into a more serene state of mind. Pick one with roots in aromatherapy, and you’re sure to find success. If you’re feeling emotional, the centering notes of cedarwood or sandalwood will help restore balance.

2. Set the mood with relaxing music
Background music is important – Spotify has several ready-made spa-inspired playlists for you to find something that’s your style. It could be ambient, classical, or something really meditative like Tibetan singing bowls or your favourite cd.

3. Cleanse from the inside.
Just 6 to 8 glasses of water every day will help to keep you hydrated and keep your vital organs in their best possible health. Make a batch of fruit-infused detox water and serve it in a champagne glass.

4. Settle your mind
To create your inner peace it’s best to start unwinding with a glass of bubbles or a herbal tea. Sit back & relax for about a half an hour without your phone or aby other interference. Once you feel calmer, enter your designated spa area.

5. Dress the part.
It’s not going to feel like a real pampering experience without the essential spa outfit, a long robe, a pair of slippers, and a head band are all you need to feel like you’ve stepped out of your regular routine and into a space of self-care.

6. Soak in a Luxurious Bath
Start your pampering process by filling your bath tub with water at just the right temperature, whether you like it piping hot or just this side of warm.

Beyond that, you can help yourself relax even further by doing a few of your favorite things whether you choose to dive into a good book or simply lie still and submerged for a while.

When it comes to taking your bath from everyday to exceptional, consider soaking in Epsom-based bath salts, rich in magnesium, which is ideal for treating sore muscles and setting you up for a great night’s sleep, while a fragrant bubble bath offers both pampering appeal and calming benefits

Don’t have a bath? No worries, try placing a few drops of essential oil into the base of your shower cubicle before you step in, the steam will send the aroma into the air.

7. Massage away your sore muscles as you soak.
With all the hard work you have been doing at home, you might have a sore back, legs, arms or neck. Take time to knead your muscles with your fingers to loosen yourself up in the warm water.

8. Exfoliate your skin.  Use a loofah or a body scrub to completely exfoliate your arms, legs, and body. Your skin will feel soft, smooth and healthy when you get out of the bath

Use gentle circular motions to slough off the dead skin. Shave your legs and other body parts after you exfoliate if you like

9. Dry your skin and apply a nourishing lotion.
Use a soft towel to pat your skin dry, then seal in the moisture by applying a body cream or lotion to your arms, legs, and body. After your covered in lotion, slip on your bathrobe to give it time to absorb into your skin before you get dressed.

10. Perfect your facial
A proper at-home facial will likely form the centrepiece of your spa session, and there are ways to achieve spa-quality results at home, by follow the following steps:

Gently exfoliate your face. Wet your face with warm water and use a washcloth or a facial brush to scrub away the dead skin. Be sure to use gentle circular motion instead of applying pressure, since your facial skin is sensitive and could stretch and wrinkle if you handle it roughly.

Give yourself a stean treatment
This is a great way to cleanse your pores and helps to promote a clear and glowing skin. For a steam treatment fill a bowl with boiling water and leave to cool slightly so that it is not to hot to burn your skin. Add a few of drops of essential oils (such as tea tree oil for acne-prone skin, lavender oil for oily skin or rose absolute oil for dry skin). Steam your face for 2-3 minutes by leaning over the bowl with a towel covering your head to trap in the steam. You can follow a steam treatment with a mask or simply some toner and moisturiser.

Doing a face mask at home is a lot of fun, and leaves your face as soft as a baby’s skin. Use a facial mask from the store or mix up a recipe using household ingredients. Apply it to your face for fifteen minutes, then wash it away.

Finally, all good spa sessions should end with phenomenally soft, raidient and hydrated skin to trap in the moisture from your facial treatment by moisturising properly. This will help to nourish the skin and boost circulation, giving a vibrant and soft complexion.

11. Give hands a TLC makeover.
Before jumping in the bath (or shower) file and shape your dry fingernails because once wet they’re more apt to break or split. File in one direction (no sawing!) on one side to the center, then the other side, and do tips last.

For a softening treat for your hands, use your prefered scrub or try using a moisturizing scrub made from 1tablespoon olive oil, 1 tablespoon sugar and a teaspoon of almond or grapeseed oil. Massage the mixture on to your hands in circular motions. After a few minutes, rinse of with warm water then pat dry. Finish with a moisturizing hand cream or lotion

12. Thank your feet with a massage
Follow grooming with a foot massage by stretching your legs out in front of you and use your fingers to pull the toes of your foot back towards you. Keep the toes pulled back and use your other hand to press into the center of your foot just above the heel. Rub in a circular motion and apply as much pressure as is comfortable

13. Treat your hair
You’re most likely missing your hairdresser right about now, as well. To treat your hair, without reaching for the closest psir of scissors, add a hair mask into your at-home spa session (as a fail-safe move). Apply it while you’re waiting for your face mask to work, or leave it on overnight for maximum effect.

14. Manicures and Pedicures
After your soak, remove any existing polish on your nails and pick out new polishes for your fingers and toes. Start by trimming your nails and pushing back your cuticles to the base of your nail beds. Next, apply your polish in as many coats as it takes to completely cover your nail (usually between 2-3 depending on the color and brand). Use a top coat to seal your nails and then sit back and relax for a few minutes while they dry.

After all your treatments, it is time to wind down and enjoy the last moments of your pamper session.
Pop on that fluffy dressing gown and slippers and make yourself a good cup of tea. Sit back and relax
